S Temple CLRC1 End-cap Mechanics FDR Power Tapes and Optical Fibres Steve Temple, RAL 1 November 2001

S Temple CLRC2 l Disc Services Design Overview »Disc services consist of : –Cooling Structures (already discussed) –LM Power Tapes –Optical Fibre Harnesses –DCS Components –FSI Components »Design presented here for discs 2,3,4,5 and 6 with three module rings »Services routing designed to allow same routing for discs with less module rings End-Cap Disc Services Power Tapes and Optical Fibre Harnesses

S Temple CLRC3 End-Cap Disc Services Power Tapes and Optical Fibre Harnesses l LM Power Tape Layout »33 power tapes per quadrant, each with individual routing »4 power tape patch panels per quadrant, on edge of the disc »All tapes routed under cooling pipes –Clearance between disc and cooling pipe = 1.13±0.35 –Allows 3 stacked power tapes under pipe at any one point - Routing maintains this –Preferable to going over cooling pipes as it avoids risk of interference with delicate module components »At all times the correct ‘sense’ of the tape is maintained to enable connection at the module and patch panel end »Front disc tapes are routed from the front of the disc through a disc aperture to the patch panel on the rear of the disc »The minimum bend radius is 4.5mm

S Temple CLRC4 End-Cap Disc Services Power Tapes and Optical Fibre Harnesses l Power Tape Design »Cross -Sectional envelope used is 21 x 0.25 mm »Problems with manufacture of current design tapes have resulted in the new tape design (detailed in ATL-IS-ES-0034) »New tape design enables 1 tape under cooling pipe at any one time - i.e tape width is now 3.4 mm wide »New Routing Required - Simpler due to greatly reduced tape width

S Temple CLRC5 End-Cap Disc Services Power Tapes and Optical Fibre Harnesses l Optical Fibre Harness Layout / Design »Each quadrant contains 6 fibre harnesses »There are two optical fibre patch panels per quadrant on the edge of the disc »Harness routing is optimised to give minimum ‘dark’ fibre when transferring the routing design to discs 1,7,8 and 9 »Each fibre harness is routed from the patch panel under cooling pipes (where appropriate) –Avoiding interference with delicate module components »Each harness is made up of one 12 way tape and one 6 way tape –Routed from the patch panel to the split point –Individual module links are then routed (3 fibres - 2 from 12 way and 1 from 6 way tape)

S Temple CLRC6 End-Cap Disc Services Power Tapes and Optical Fibre Harnesses l Optical Fibre Harness Layout / Design (Cont’d) »Front disc harnesses are routed through disc apertures near the inner edge of the disc »Minimum fibre bend radius of 20 mm is always observed

S Temple CLRC7 End-Cap Disc Services Power Tapes and Optical Fibre Harnesses l Other Disc Services »DCS Components - Exact positions yet to be defined but possible spaces identified –Air Temperature Sensors - Mounted on pedestals away from disc (Outside envelope 15x15x5mm) –Mechanical Structure Temperature Sensors - Bonded to disc (Outside envelope 4x2.2x1mm) – Humidity Sensors - Positioned close to air temp sensors (Outside envelope 20x5x5mm) –Barometric Pressure Sensors - (Outside envelope 15x10x4mm)

S Temple CLRC8 l Other Disc Services (Cont’d) »FSI Alignment Components –Alignment Jewels (Outside envelope 32x35x30mm) positioned on rear of disc at three positions (with the exception of disc 9) –Retro-reflectors are mounted on module mounting nuts - due to space restrictions on fully populated front disc End-Cap Disc Services Power Tapes and Optical Fibre Harnesses
