COMMON CORE ACADEMY SESSION TWO: STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT STUDENTS’ COMPREHENSION OF TEXT NOVEMBER 8, 2012 Participants will be able to explain why close reading is important, identify multiple strategies for close reading, and design one classroom activity implementing two of these strategies..

Activator: Anticipation Guide Complete the anticipation guide for “Text- Dependent Questions” prior to watching the video

Anticipation Guide Complete the “after” for the anticipation guide

Anticipation Guides May be used for at the start of a unit, before reading, or prior to viewing a video. Help cue students to important ideas and concepts. Guides a student’s interaction with the text. Activates prior knowledge. One way to address misconceptions.

Text Annotation Symbols Varying formats Consider level of student Encourage students to be systematic It is much more than simple underlining/highlighting Thinking out of box for non-alterable materials (like textbooks)
