GOAL: SIMPLIFY ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS Section 1-3: Simplifying Algebraic Expressions
Definitions Terms: For an expression 2x + 1, terms are the parts that are added together. Coefficient: In a term with a variable, such as 2x the 2 is the coefficient. Like Terms: Have the same variable with matching exponents. For example: 2x and 4x are like terms 4ab and -8ab are like terms Constant Terms: Numbers such as 3 and -2, they are also considered like terms.
Example 1: Identify Terms in an Expression Identify the terms in the expression -11 – 7x – 2x 2
Example 2: Identify Coefficients and Like Terms Identify the coefficients and like terms in the expression: x 2 – 7x + 5 – 3x 2 – 10
Checkpoint: Identify Terms, Coefficients, and Like Terms Identify the: Terms CoefficientsLike Terms
TWO ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS ARE EQUIVALENT EXPRESSIONS IF WHEN YOU SUBSTITUTE THE SAME VALUE FOR THE VARIABLE IN EACH EXPRESSION, YOU ALWAYS GET THE SAME RESULT. A Simplified Expression has no grouping symbols and all like terms have been combined.
Example 3: Simplify by Combining Like Terms Simplify the expression: A. B.C.
a. 12 – 5(x – 1) b. 4(6 – x) + 3(x – 8) Example 4: Simplify Expressions with Grouping Symbols
Checkpoint: Simplify Expressions
Example 5: Use a Real – Life Model
Checkpoint: Use A Real Life Model A calling card charges $1 for all phone calls up to 15 minutes and $0.25 for each additional minute. A. Write and simplify an expression that gives the total cost of a phone call that lasts m minutes. Where m is at least 15. B. Use your answer from Exercise A to find the total cost of a phone call that lasts for 28 minutes. C. Use your answer from Exercise A to find the total cost of a phone call that lasts for 1 hour 10 minutes.
