The Basics of High School Freshman Advisement

9 th Grade Advisement – What to Expect Each 9 th grade student and his/her parent will meet with a member of each department at AHS. – This includes: English, math, science, social studies, foreign language, p.e., fine arts, and career tech. In making a 4 year plan, each teacher will recommend courses for students based on their current courses and grades. After visiting each department, please fill out an evaluation form and check-out with a counselor.

What is a Transcript? A cumulative permanent record. A record of all courses taken in high school and the grades received. Colleges use transcripts to help determine what kind of college student you will be.

HIGH SCHOOL: The Basics What is a Transcript? Includes GPA and class rank. Freshman year grades are part of a student’s GPA as well as Senior year. Class rank is determined by GPA. By the end of the school year, a student can earn a total of 8 credits.

GRADING SYSTEM A B80-89 C74-79 D70-73 F69 &below If students fail an academic course, they will have to repeat that course before they will receive credit. A failing grade will appear on a student’s transcript forever. It will not be removed even if the course is repeated and the student receives a passing grade.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE GPA is the numeric average of all grades calculated on a 4.0 scale GPA scale: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 The higher the grades, the higher the GPA Failing a course or getting a low grade will lower a student’s GPA!
