The Main Idea – Chapter 5 This chapter discusses many different laws and their effects upon businesses 5.2- Describes laws that protect workers

The Importance of Employment Laws Early 1900s companies had tremendous power over employees They could pay whatever they wanted, make ppl work in dangerous conditions, not hire minorities, and could pay women less

The Importance of Employment Laws Beginning of 1930’s, Congress and state legislatures saw change was needed Strict penalties for companies who violate these laws: Fines Loss of gov’t contracts Employment laws Regulate the relationship between companies and their workers and give workers significant rights and benefits

Five major kinds of employment laws we will discuss further: Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Occupational safety and health laws Wage-hour laws Benefits laws Labor relations laws
