Measuring Liquid Volume 2/9/ rd Grade

Question How can you find the volume of a liquid?

Volume Volume is the amount of space an object takes up In today's class we are going to learn about the tool used to measure the volume of a liquid. Just like when you use a ruler to measure length, scientists use graduated cylinders to measure the volume of a liquid. Before you can actually use a graduated cylinder, it is important to know how to read one. Today we will learn how to read a graduated cylinder then we will practice using real ones.

Procedure 1.What is a graduated cylinder? – It's basically a ruler that measures in 3D, as opposed to a ruler, which only measures 1 dimension. – The basic unit for volume is liter (L) and most graduated cylinders measure in milliliters (mL).

Graduated Cylinder

How to read a graduated cylinder Reading the Meniscus Song

Graduated Cylinder Practice Finding the Volume of a Liquid 1.Carefully pour the water from the beaker into the graduated cylinder 2.Find the meniscus line and write down the initial volume of the water in your notebook 3.Use your pipet to help you measure exactly 50mL of water in your graduated cylinder 4.Fill your graduated cylinder with a different amount of water, record how much and draw a picture of this in your science notebooks. Be sure to draw in your meniscus line.

Conclusions/Results Did you successfully use your pipet to transfer water into the graduated cylinder? Why or why not?
