George Kirkpatrick 10/27/15

George Bush  A determined man who didn’t let a “C” keep him from following his dreams.  Joined Texas Air National Guard in Discharged Honorably in  Met his wife Laura in 1977; had 2 twin girls.  President in  Nations leader during 9/11.  Drinker before presidency, during presidency, and during marriage. His wife saved him.

The Call “Haven’t given a commencement speech since office.” Gives a sense of lack of practice. Rustic.

Responsibility? Why? – “One trustee I know really well-laughter.” Bush’s wife. – Southern Methodist University also holds Bush’s Presidential Library. – “I got a call from my landlord.” (hahaha) Landlord meaning the host of Bush’s Library.

Why Bush is at SMU? “To deliver the 100 th Spring Commencement address.” Bush says this as a precursor to his next words… “I admire President Turner’s persuasiveness – laughter-.” Bush is a bad speaker, no argument there. Breaks the ice by expressing humor.

Audience Bush has come to Southern Methodist University to address the Class of A wider audience than that would be all those graduating in the years to come. Parents

Purpose “SMU has laid a foundation.” – SMU has laid the foundation, now go out and build the house. Use the skills that were given to you for good. To inspire the Class of 2015 “I am honored to be here-to deliver the 100 th Spring Commencement address.” – Showing appreciation for being asked to speak to the for SMU’s 100 th Commencement address. – It is a big occasion.

“Like Churchill, I now paint. Unlike Churchill, the painting isn’t worth much without the signature.” Analogy between Churchill and Bush however Bush’s paintings aren’t worth much without his signature. Don’t be like Bush. Make a name for yourself. Create a reputation for yourself, one that will be able to be worth something without the signature!

Tone Inspirational  “You are blessed to live in the greatest Nation – ever.”  Greatest Nation – ever…. Strikes pride into the graduates. Creates a prideful and hopeful beginning for their new lives ahead.  “Some say our best days are behind us.” “With a bright generation like you-these are not dark days. These are great days.”  A new generation each year brings new ideas to the table so the globe is always turning.  “As you serve others, you can inspire others.”  Take what you have learned to help others. Those actions will have a ripple effect.

Inspirational speech from Bush to the future of America.

Speech Thanks, Thank you Through the use of anaphora, Bush expresses his feelings of thanks towards the audience as well as President Turner for letting him speak. President of the United States of America Pretty sure nothing else needs to be said about that. Automatic ethos Still builds ethos by recognizing officials and parents, etc. “enjoyed right to buy required campus meal plan.” Emotional appeal to the audience.

Analogy between Moses and The Class of 2015 Moses “answered the call, led his people, and history was made.” – Mentioned to express that Moses came to recognize his path. “You, too, will be called at some point.” – “You” referring to the Class of Bush wants the Class to take the chance when it comes them. They may never have that same opportunity again.
