Food In your Life Why do you eat? Nutrients-are substances that are needed by the body to function, grow and supply you with energy. Reasons for eating include: 1. Physical need. 2. Psychological desire. Recognizing the difference helps one make healthy choices with food.

Physical need for food Hunger-is a natural drive that protects you from starvation. When the stomach is empty, its wall contract, nerves sending signals to the brain that the body needs replenishing When full, it stretches, nerves are no longer send signals

How food choices are made Environmental factors effect choices. Culture- the area you live in, and ethnic background. (ex. South-BBQ, grits, Cajun, mexican. MN-Hot dishes, corn, beef. Asian-rice, Italy-pastas, Japan-sushi/rice, Mexico-beans & rice, chiles, corn)

Environmental factors effect choices Family & Friends- What, when you ate as a child, friends and social experiences Advertising- TV, Mags, radio and billboards. Just because you see or read it, does it always mean it’s true? Time & Money Cost and convenience of food play a large role. Busy vs Bored Emotions stressed, depressed, bored, Activities & Athletics

Eating habits Choosing food that taste good and provide nutrients can be very difficult. Foods with to much fat, Sodium and cholesterol generally taste better than others and can lead to obesity, heart disease and other chronic diseases

Why is Nutrition so Important for teens? Fastest rate of Growth Body uses more energy Higher need for nutrients

Why is it so hard?? List several reasons why it is so hard to eat right and get the daily recommend nutrients in ones diet as a teenager?
