Tips and Tricks for RESEARCH Don’t begin or end a paragraph with a quote. Imbed your quotes in your sentences and your paragraphs. Don’t use ambiguous pronouns: they, it, etc. Don’t address yourself or the reader: we, us, I, you. Don’t EVER say, “I think” or “You should”. This is not all about YOUR OPINION, this is about RESEARCH and CLAIMS.

Answer the following questions 1.What font should your outline/paper be typed in? 2.What size font should EVERYTHING be in? 3.What should be in the top right hand corner of your paper? 4.What four things should be included in your heading? 5.T/F: Your entire thesis statement should be in italics.

ICE: Introduce, Cite, Explain X states, “…..” X argues that, “….” Writing in his article “article title” X explains, “…..” For instance, …. Critics argue…. X claims,…. According to X…..

ICE: Example QUOTE: “Ah, but let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will always be in her heart.” –Nathaniel Hawthorne Scarlet Letter ICE: For instance, writing in The Scarlet Letter Nathaniel Hawthorne explains that although Hester can “cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will always be in her heart” (32). Although the mark isn’t visible, the eternal impact of it’s power for judgment and ridicule will outlast it’s appearance in her life.

YOUR TURN Read through the NewsELA article. Find 3 sentences to ICE.
