Background information Helen Keller was born in Alabama in When she was only 19 months old, she Had a high fever that left her blind and deaf. When she was almost 7 years old, her parents engaged ( 雇 ) Anne Mansfield Sullivan to be her tutor. With dedication ( 奉献 ), patience, courage and love of Miss Sullivan, Helen Keller quickly learned to read and write, and began to speak by the age of 10.

When she was 20, she entered Radcliffe College, with Miss Sullivan at her side to spell textbooks, letter by letter, into her hand. 4 years later, Helen Keller was awarded a Bachelor’s degree. After graduation, Helen began her life’s work of helping blind and deaf people. She travelled around the world to lecture and wrote many books and articles.

The name of Helen Keller is known around the world as a symbol ( 符号 ) of courage in the face of overwhelming odds ( 尽管情况非常不利 ). She was a woman of great intelligence and high ambition. She died at the age of 87, more than 30 years after the death of Anne Sullivan. Helen Keller is remembered by the world for her great will and contributions.
