Indirect Objects

An indirect object is similar to a direct object, it also: Is always a noun or pronoun Comes after and action verb Is never in the prepositional phrase Can also be compound

There are some differences though, such as: It comes before the direct object. There is never an indirect object if there is not a direct object. It can NOT be in a sentence by itself.

So how do you find the IO? Find the verb. Make sure that it is an action verb (NOT a linking verb). Find the direct object. Ask: To whom? To what? For whom? For what? Make sure that the answer comes between the verb and the direct object.

So now let’s find the I.O. Mary fed the whale fish. Tell me a story. Joe did her and me a favor. _________ _____ I.O. D.O. (You) ______ I.O. D.O. _____ _____ I.O. I.O. D.O.

Watch out for prepositional phrases!! Helen told Sue a joke. Here we have an indirect object Look at this sentence though: Helen told a joke to Sue. This sentence does not have an indirect object. ________ _____ I.O. D.O. ( ) _________ ______ D.O.
