Identifying with Christ Romans 6:1-4 Baptism

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Romans 6:1-4 (ESV)

4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. Romans 6:1-4 (ESV)

3 Ways Christians Identify with Christ

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 1) Christians identify with Christ's DEATH (verses 1-3)

A) Jesus died for ME “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8 ESV) 1) Christians identify with Christ's DEATH (verses 1-3)

B) My old self died alongside CHRIST “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 ESV) 1) Christians identify with Christ's DEATH (verses 1-3)

C) I am now dead to SIN Verse 2 – “By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?” 1) Christians identify with Christ's DEATH (verses 1-3)

2) Christians identify with Christ's BURIAL (verse 4a) Verse 4a – “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death”

2) Christians identify with Christ's BURIAL (verse 4a) A) My past failures are FORGIVEN “as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us” Psalm 103:12 (ESV)

2) Christians identify with Christ's BURIAL (verse 4a) B) My old self is buried and GONE “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

3) Christians identify with Christ's RESURRECTION (verse 4b) Verse 4b - in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

3) Christians identify with Christ's RESURRECTION (verse 4b) A) I have a new LIFE “we too might walk in newness of life.”

3) Christians identify with Christ's RESURRECTION (verse 4b) B) I have a new FUTURE “ 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:12 ESV)

3) Christians identify with Christ's RESURRECTION (verse 4b) C) I have a new MASTER “Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28 ESV)
