PSD’s Youth Resiliency Initiative Developing a Comprehensive School Health Program to Support all Students

Outcome: To foster the development of resilient children, youth, and families within Parkland School Division

Strategy: Work collaboratively with students, school stakeholders, local community and industry partners to create meaningful programs, activities, and relationships that support lifelong, community engaged, socially responsible citizens

What is Positive Mental Health? “The capacity of each and all of us to feel, think, and act in ways that enhance our ability to enjoy life and deal with the challenges we face. It is a positive sense of emotional and spiritual well-being that respects the importance of culture, equity, social justice, interconnections and personal dignity.” Public Health Agency of Canada

Positive Mental Health builds Resiliency PSD’s Ultimate Goal: Student Success and Well-Being

Healthy Kids = Better Learners

Understanding Positive Mental Health Promotes the enhancement of positive qualities:  development of positive personal traits, positive personal experiences/ relationships,  enabling initiatives  programs that assist in enhancing the quality of life of children and youth,  reducing the risk of developing mental-health related concerns

School as a Critical Setting Schools provide a “critical context for shaping children’s self- esteem, self- efficacy and sense of control over their lives”. Stewart, Sun, Patterson, Lemerle and Hardie (2004)

But schools can’t do it alone! It takes a village to raise a child.

Together we are stronger!
