Selected State Legislation through the years 2000-HB 2128 officially and immediately changed our name to the Department of Career and Technology Education House Bill 2886 allowed technology centers to teach math above Algebra 1 and Science above Biology 1 with subject certified teachers House Bill 2662 authorized that technology center districts may offer programs/career majors for sophomores for academic credit for math and science courses above Algebra I and Biology I, if they are enrolled in a focused field of study 2005-Senate Bill 982 established the Achieving Classroom Excellence (ACE) initiative which provided new framework for all Oklahoma school systems to implement standards, curriculum, and assessments

Selected State Legislation through the years 2006-Senate Bill 1792 established test requirements and allowed for alternate tests to be adopted 2009-Senate Bill 497 mandated school districts to report any business and industry-recognized endorsements attained on students’ high school transcripts 2009-Senate Bill 867 allows for technology centers to provide remediation on any EOI subject 2011-House Bill 1456 established the A-F School Grading System 2013 – SB559 allowed alternate tests to be used as exemptions

FAST Facts MYTH: You can go to career tech or you can go to college REALITY: Fifty percent of our students in the technology centers go onto post secondary education. – Big jump between FY2013-FY2014

Things that drive us crazy Myth If you can’t make it at the high school – you need to go to vo-tech OR You are too smart to go to vo-tech-those jobs don’t make any money. Reality Reading levels for technical manuals are quite high. Career Tech Academies are very selective and require select foundational skills. And many employees are searching for highly skilled workers and are willing to pay them.
