Assignment Background The President has hired you as the head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). To fight global warming and save the planet he wants you to determine how badly Russia messed up their environment. Through the next three days you will analyze three case studies and ultimately create your plan outlining their contributions and how we should fix the problems.
Directions: HEI Google Earth Tours Create a Google Earth tour analyzing the effects of the Soviet Union’s government policies. Your tour must have: –1 placemark for each environmental disaster (issue). –Give each placemark a title. –If the placemark is pointing to a picture, write (Picture) in parentheses in the title. –In the description for each placemark, write the answer the following questions. How is this an effect of the Soviet Union’s policy? Describe the impact this issue had on the environment. How would you solve this problem?
Placemark Help - Click the button that looks like this to create a new placemark. - Locate your placemark first, once you start typing you can’t move it. - If you are pointing to a picture, point directly to it. - Check your title and description for spelling and grammatical errors - Placemarks go into the My Places section on the left side. - When you are done adding placemarks right click on MY PLACES and choose save as. - Save only your three placemarks.
Saving Help If you plan on working on it at home… Option 1: Flash drive. - Right click on My Places and save it on your flash. Option 2: Upload you unfinished tour onto the class wiki. - Right click on My Places and save it on the laptop someplace. - Go to the File page of the class wiki and upload your tour like any other assignment. - Remember, you must save it someplace on your computer at home before it will allow you to open it. You also must open google earth first then open your tour by clicking File – Open – then locating the file. If you can not work on it at home… Option 1: S drive - Save it in the S: Student – Student Read Only – Orso – 1 st Period folder. Option 2: Your drive Option 3: See option 2 on the left.
Laptop Directions – Google Earth Tours You must log in as a Student. Don’t X off of Novell, you need it to access Google Earth. When it loads, do what the power point slide with the direction says.
Step 1 – Click on the Novell window at the bottom, near the Start button. Step 2 – Click on Google Earth. It takes a minute to load.
Step 3 - Once in Google Earth, click File in the top left. Then click Open.
Step 4 – Go to (S:) Student – Student Read Only – Orso folder.
Step 5 – Click on the file called Chernobyl mine or Aral Sea mine. Step 6 – Click open.
Next, a bunch of thumbtacks will appear on the map and under the PLACES section on the left side. Step 7 – Click on the first Thumbtack called Irrigation on the Amu Dayra for the Aral Sea file. For the Chernobyl file click on the one called Nuclear Radiation. This will fly you to the first thumbtack. Go through each thumbtack one at a time.
- As you go through each tumbtack, check out the pictures. -To do this you must make sure that you have the Geographic Web box is checked in the layers section. -To see the pictures click the small blue boxes. -You can zoom in and out using the + and – signs in the upper right. - Feel free to explore the region on your own.
