Presentation transcript:

Background The President has hired you as the head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). To fight global warming and save the planet he wants you to determine how badly Russia messed up their environment. Through the next three days you will analyze three case studies and ultimately create your plan outlining their contributions and how we should fix the problems.

Intro World War II ends and the US and Russia are the winners. Russia takes control of land in Eastern Europe. Russia becomes United Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, or Soviet Union).

The Soviet Union

Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan were all controlled by the Russian government in Moscow.

Causes of Environmental Problems 1.Industrialization – rapid and at all costs 2.Cold War arms race - build up nuclear weapons Task  How did these two things combined lead to disaster?

Effects - Directions Create a Google Earth tour analyzing the effects of the Soviet Union’s government policies. Your tour must have: –1 placemark for each environmental disaster. –Give each placemark a title. –If the placemark is pointing to a picture, write (Picture) in parentheses in the title. –In the description for each placemark, write the answer the following questions. How is this an effect of the Soviet Union’s policy? What makes this an environmental problem? How would you solve this problem?

Placemark Help - Click the button that looks like this to create a new placemark. - Locate your placemark first, once you start typing you can’t move it. - If you are pointing to a picture point directly to it. - Check your title and description for spelling and grammatical errors - Placemarks go into the My Places section on the left side. - When you are done adding placemarks right click on my places and choose save as. - Save only your six placemarks.

Laptop Directions You must log in as a Student. Don’t X off of Novell, you need it to access Google Earth. Once you access Google Earth agree to the LanDisk thing. When it loads, do what the power point slide with the direction says.

Google Earth Help Click on the Novell window at the bottom by the start button. Open Google Earth. To find Chernobyl type N, E in the Search box and hit enter. Volga River  N, E Aral Sea  N, E
