RENEWABLE ENERGY In the region of Brussels

Some numbers In % of the electricity in Europe was generated by nuclear facilities. In Belgium 51%! In Europe 9% of the total energy production came from renewable energy. In Belgium only 3%!

In Brussels only 1% of the total energy production comes from renewable energy! With this presentation, we’ll try to give you an idea where this little 1% comes from.

Solar panels Solar panels are placed on a roof The light is converted into electricity Before 2010 many solar panels were placed  these m ² solar panels = energy for 1500 families during 1 year Before 2010 the federal government & Brussels paid back 50% if you installed solar panels

Solar panels Until 2012 you could introduce 40% of the price at the taxes But now the government doesn’t give as much financial support  less families/companies invest in it However, some companies still do. Prémaman, Delhaize & Colruyt places solar panels on all new buildings

Solar water heater Solar water heater = the warmth of the sun is caught by solar panels and through pipes the water becomes warm in a tank If there is too little sun, the water heats in the traditional method (fuel or natural gas)

Solar water heater The solar water heater can warm up 30 to 80% of the water you need in your house  annually you can save 200 liters of fuel or 200m³ of gas) Price = 5500 euro The federal government & the district Brussels pay back 70% In Flanders there are solar water heaters In Brussels 855 families and a lot of gyms/public buildings heat their water with solar heaters

Warmth pump A warmth pump = it takes up the warmth of the ground, air or groundwater and heats this once more The construction of a warmth pump with warmth of the ground

Warmth pump The construction (pipes) of a warmth pump using groundwater The construction of a pump with warmth of air

Warmth pump A warmth pump uses 70% warmth from the surroundings and 30% electricity.  much less than traditional heating (with natural gas or fuel)

Warmth pump In Brussels they only place warmth pumps which use warmth of the ground (vertical pipes) or from the air  these take the fewest place in a city Price = between € 6000 and € 7000 The federal government & Brussels pay back between € 2000 and € 2500.

City wind mills City wind mills are smaller than ordinary wind turbines and they have less output. City wind mills are small horizontal or vertical wind turbines which you can place on roofs of buildings. horizontal wind turbine vertical wind turbine

City wind mills In 2009 there were 129 wind turbines in Flanders & in Walloon 79 In Brussels large wind turbines cannot be placed  the airport is situated near the city Since 2009 they are examining whether wind mills can be placed in Brussels.

City wind mills The minister of energy is now doing a study on the roof of the Manhattan tower at Rogier Square.  to examine if the small wind mills will produce enough energy and if it is better to place horizontal or vertical wind mills

Conclusion: We still have a lot of work to do in our capital!
