Wait…What is SQ3R? Here is an overview Survey – Preview a chapter or section Question – Ask yourself questions about what you have read Read – Read material carefully Recite – Read what you just read out loud, in your own words. (Pretend you are trying to explain it to a study partner) Review – Review for main ideas and anything you don’t understand

Look over whole chapter BEFORE reading: * Skim headings and subheadings * Look at pictures, charts, maps, graphs, and read information under each * Read chapter introduction, new words, and summary * Read chapter questions if any Survey in detail

* Write down any chapter questions you will need to answer * Put them aside and answer them later * List new vocabulary words to define * Be ready for T-notes * Turn headings into questions * Use chapter questions to help using “who, what, when, where, why and how” words Question in detail

* Just concentrate on the reading!! * After each paragraph, ask: * What is the main idea? * What are important details about the main idea? Read in detail

This is a very important step! After reading each paragraph take a few seconds to think about what you have read: * Talk out loud * Oral note taking * Highlighting * Underlining Recite in detail

Review in detail Try to remember what was in each section of the lesson: * What were the main points? * Now answer the chapter questions * Define vocabulary
