2011 PCT Technical Training

Product Handling Never remove the touch screen from its package by gripping and pulling the flat cable. This may break the cable. Handle the product with gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints or smudges. The transparency of the touch screen is critical. Once removed from the original package, touch screens are not to be stacked. The edges may cause scratching. Do not place heavy objects on the touch screen. Prevent assembly tools from coming into contact with the touch screen. Whenever possible, use plastic tools. Do not apply undue stress to the cable area (this is the most fragile section). The rear (PET) surface may be cleaned by blowing any contaminants with a filtered de-ionized air source. NEVER use isopropyl alcohol to clean the rear surface. The front surface (cover lens) may be cleaned with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Ensure that there are no contaminants in the cloth. Prevent any liquids from coming into contact with the edges of the touch screen. © 3M 2007. All Rights Reserved 3M CONFIDENTIAL

Touch Screen Tails Type of Tail – Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) Many tails – designs can have 3 – 6 tails Tail Construction Flat Flex Circuit (FFC) Gold Pins – always on top away from controller board Stiffener – located on back side opposite of gold pins Tail can be folded and creased 1 time in many locations Tails should be taped down to prevent possible damage Refer to each touch screen marketing drawing for number of tails, locations, and specific size and mechanical constraints © 3M 2009. Inserting Touch Screen Tails into Connectors Open both clips on ZIF connector Insert tail so the gold pins are completely in the connector Close both clips on connector Verify no gold showing along connector edge for proper insertion alignment Gold side of connector should face up as you insert the tail © 3M 2009. Product Inspection – Size and Types (interim) Viewing Area Anomalies All diameters refer to the smallest circle that will totally contain the anomaly. A maximum of 5 anomalies within specification are allowed per touch screen. Artifacts measuring less than 0.005 inches are not counted as anomalies. All Measurements Are In Inches Opaque Anomaly Circular 0.040 Linear 0.125 X 0.010 Translucent Anomaly 0.070 .5 X 0.010 © 3M 2007. All Rights Reserved 3M CONFIDENTIAL

Integration – Gaskets & Spacing off LCD Spacing between LCD frame and touch screen .107” Kapton Tape – Permacel P-221 Polyimide Film Recommended Gaskets – Total spacing .107” VHB 4611 (.045”) + VHB 5962 (.062”) = .107” total VHB 4611 (.045”) + VHB 4956 (.062”) = .107” total VHB 5952 (.045”) + VHB 5962 (.062”) = .107” Total 3M Touch Part # 98-0003-3651-5, complete stackup in roll form © 3M 2009. Integration - taping Taping the LCD Layer of Kapton tape on LCD frame – optional for ease of serviceability Layer of VHB - .107” thick, to attach Touch screen to LCD frame (3M Touch Part # 98-0003-3651-5) Align tape with inside edge of LCD frame and Leave air gap (1mm – 2mm) in each corner to allow for ventilation Remove top release liner of VHB only in the 4 corners about 1” in length – this creates a pull tab for the release liner © 3M 2009. All Rights Reserved 3M CONFIDENTIAL

Integration – Placement & Aligning the touch screen to LCD Carefully Remove the release liner from the rear of the touch screen Align 1 corner of the viewing area of the touch screen to the viewing area of the LCD Place that corner of the touch screen down onto the VHB Align the opposite corner of the touch screen in the same manor and place onto the VHB (squaring the touch screen). Pull the release liner tabs gently to remove each liner on all 4 sides Rub finger along each side to ensure complete wetting of the adhesive on the VHB fully securing the touch screen © 3M 2009. Integration – Routing and Taping tails Tails vary in # of connections, width, and construction. Consult touch screen marketing drawing for detail design constraints. The sensor tail is designed to be flexible, and it may be creased once in a single direction, in multiple locations along the tail and then secured in position with a light adhesive (Kapton) tape. Avoid hard angular creases (45°) within 1/2” of tail bond, connector, or connection areas of the tail. Apply tape or other insulating material to sharp edges to protect the tail. Route the cable away from sharp edges whenever possible. © 3M 2009. All Rights Reserved 3M CONFIDENTIAL
