Introduction to the Reproductive System
Human Sexuality Outline. Functions  To reproduce  Includes testes and ovaries  Passing of genetic material to offspring  To reproduce  Includes testes.
 To pass on heritable traits (through DNA recombination) to further generations.  The formation of gametes (sperm or egg).  Delivery of sperm to egg.

Presentation transcript:

Reproductive Systems: Male and Female

Male Testicle: Produces sperm and testosterone (puberty) Penis: Allows for exit of urine and semen Scrotum: Holds testis, controls temperature Urethra: Tube for urine and semen excretion (exit) Vas Deferens: Tube for sperm storage and transport from epididymis to urethra Prostate & Bulbourethral Gland: Secretes fluid in semen Seminal Vesicle:Secretes sugar substance for food for sperm Epididymis: Tube where sperm grow and mature and learn to swim

Sperm Head carries all genetic information (DNA) Mitochondria give energy for movement Tail: Movement

Cross section of Testicle Seminiferous Tubules: Production of sperm Tiny tubes = a lot of surface area Men produce billions of sperm in their lifetime

Female Ovaries: Produce eggs Fallopian Tubes: Transport eggs from ovaries to uterus, fertilization takes place here Uterus: Muscular organ that supports developing child Cervix: Opening to the uterus from vagina Vagina: Muscular tube that lead to the uterus (birth canal) Labia: External skin that protects the uretha and vagina Clitoris: Erectile organ, homologus (same function as) to the penis

Menstrual Cycle LH- Luteinizing Hormone FSH- Follicle Stimulating Hormone Estrogen- Hormone responsible for female secondary sex characteristics (puberty) and thickening of uterus lining Progesterone- Pregnancy Hormone, continues the thickening of uterus lining Corpus Luteum- portion of ovary where egg is released and begins to release hormones after ovulation.

Ovulation and Implantation
