ADVANTAGES FOR PAKISTAN AND OTHER DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IN JOINING THE MADRID PROTOCOL

Benefits for trademark owners simple and economical procedure protection in 79 other countries with fewer formalities single (international) application in one language single currency subsequent changes entered in the International Register by means of a single, simple procedure

Benefits for the national economy and the Government support of exports from the country (simplify protecting trademarks abroad) companies in other Contracting Parties to the Madrid Protocol will have easier access to the protection of their marks in the country. That facility would help to strengthen the climate for foreign investment source of income –fees for the handling of international applications submitted by nationals or residents –share of the total amount corresponding to the complementary fees collected by WIPO + share of the total sum of the supplementary fees collected for each class of goods or services beyond the third; or –individual fees gradual increase in registration activity, which could contribute to the improvement of its industrial property infrastructure

Benefits for Local Trademark Agents Local trademark agents would be able to file international applications on behalf of trademark owners established in their country A decrease in purely procedural work can be expected to be offset by an increase in substantive work (i.e. searches, responses to objections, raising of objections, requests for annulment or cancellation, dispute settlement, license and assignment contracts…) => change in the nature of their work when a designation is the subject of a refusal of protection by the national Office, the services of a local agent will be needed in order to respond to the objections post-registration activity can be expected to compensate for any reduction in local filing activity
