What to do as a Sponsor Submit your student’s intent to participate via the online form on the Whalen Symposium website Submission form opens: December 1, 2015 Submission form deadline: March 4, 2015

What to do as a Sponsor Mentor students in the development of their abstracts REVIEW abstracts to ensure:  high quality  appropriate length  free of grammatical and typographic errors

8-minute presentation per group (regardless of number of student authors) PLUS Brief Q & A period following the three presentations per session Oral Presentation Requirements

Poster Presentation

Displayed for two consecutive 30- minute sessions Students should be prepared to discuss their research Poster Presentation Requirements

Creative Presentation

The creation and production of:  Live performance  dance, theatre, music, etc.  Visual and media art  film, photography, paintings, sculptures, costume and set designs, etc. The scholarship of discovery Creative Presentations – Visual, Media, and Performing Arts

8-minute presentation to include introduction, findings, and performance or visual and media art Venue is assigned on the basis of performance needs (e.g., stage, music stands, etc.) Creative Presentation Requirements

Abstracts Submit abstract AFTER your faculty sponsor has submitted intent to participate (after Dec 1, 2015) Only one abstract per presentation is necessary Sample abstracts will be provided on the website

Two Types: 1. Abstract to participate: words OR 2. Abstract to be considered for an award: 500–700 words Abstracts

Name, faculty sponsor, title PLUS extended summary: 1. Background: Why you created your work 2. Methods: How your work came to be 3. Results: How your work turned out 4. Discussion and Conclusions: What your work means Abstract to be Considered for an Award

 Supporting materials are encouraged:  e.g., charts, graphs, images, choreography documentation or musical scores  References are REQUIRED These items are not included in the word limit Abstract to be Considered for an Award

Extended summary must include: 1.Your initial questions of investigation 2. Brief articulation of artists, forms, theories, methods or movements inspiring or informing the creative work 3. How the work will be presented 4. Proposed significance to the field Abstract to be Considered for an Award – Creative Work
