The differences between Implicit and Explicit and between Details and Commentary

What do we think these words mean? Explicit: Implicit:

Implicit: Meaning is not clearly stated; the reader or listener has to infer (make an educated guess) what the author or speaker means Explicit: Meaning is clearly stated, with no doubt about content or the purpose of the author or speaker; no inference (guessing) needed

In other words … Explicit: You can tell EXACTLY what the writer’s message is, because the writer comes right out and says it. Example: That shirt is ugly, and you shouldn’t even think about buying it.

Implicit: You have to figure out what the writer’s message is, because the writer merely hints at the message. Example: Hmmm. I’ve never seen that kind of shirt before. How about if we look at some other shirts before making a decision? In other words …

Details and Commentary

What are details? O Examples O Proof O Evidence O Support O Quotations O Textual References

What is Commentary? O Opinion Claim/Thesis O Interpretation O Insight O Analysis O Personal Response O Evaluation O Explication O Reflection June is the best month of the year.

Which part is details and which is commentary? O Atticus believes in treating his children like adults. For example, he tells Uncle Jack to always tell children the truth and not to lie to them just because they’re young.

O Again, which part is details and which is commentary? O Atticus believes in treating his children like adults. For example, he tells Uncle Jack to always tell children the truth and not to lie to them just because they’re young. Atticus doesn’t mislead them, but is honest with them, as he is with adults. He says, that with his guidance, his “children can handle the truth.”

Prompt: Explain one of the implicit messages in the “Real Bugs” commercial. Give details from the commercial to support your idea.
