Finding the Epicenter of an Earthquake

Focus vs. Epicenter

Svaha (The other 5 second rule) Lightning and Thunder P-Waves and S-Waves A general rule of thumb: For every 5 seconds of time between the lightning and the thunder the storm is about 1 mile away. For example if you see the lightning and count to 10 and then hear the thunder the storm is about 2 miles away. (10 seconds ÷ 5 = 2 miles) The P-Waves would be like the lightning because the P-Waves are faster and the S-Waves are like the thunder because the S- Waves are slower. The longer the time interval between the P- Waves and the S-Waves the further away the epicenter.
