Interaction Of Elements and Natural Processes Operating in the Tongariro Volcanic Centre

Definition Involves elements of an environment being linked together. Interaction incorporates movement, flows, connections, links and interrelationships. Landscapes are the visible outcome of interactions. Interaction can bring about environmental change. What is an example of interaction in this classroom? What change does it bring about?

Elements vs. Processes What is an element? A part, thing, or component of the environment What is a process? A series of actions that shape or change the environment Therefore: Vegetation is a _________________ But vegetation succession is a ______________ Element Process

Warm up Task Using the images below, write a sentence about how the following elements interact: Soil interacts with vegetation because the more soil there is, the more vegetation can grow. Also, the more vegetation there is, the more wind-blown particles are trapped, and leaves/debris are dropped – which creates soil.

3 September LO) To be able to explain the interaction of elements in the TVC SC) You can explain how 2 elements interact differently in different places DN) Turn to the person next to you and tell them what Orographic Rainfall is How does this relate to the TVC?

OROGRAPHIC RAINFALL in the TVC Peaks, eg Ruapehu at 2797m This can help you explain a spatial variation TASMAN SEA South-west slopes of Ruapehu Rangipo Desert on the East

Warm up Task Climate Vegetation Using the images below, write a sentence about how the following elements interact: Climate Vegetation

Task | Elements Diagram Text Box Shuffle task to create an interaction diagram The template has the arrows and the elements Rearrange the textboxes to create a correct diagram Open up the text box shuffle PPT in: S:\Social Science\2. Geography\GEO 201\TVC Rearrange the text boxes to fit with the diagram SAVE AS into your own documents

Interaction Diagram Relief Soil Vegetation Climate LOCATION: TVC Steep relief means less soil = less vegetation The more erosive the weather, the less soil there will be Vegetation traps windblown particles, and drops leaves to create soil The colder the climate the less and the smaller the vegetation The higher the elevation the colder the climate Soil Vegetation Vegetation can slow down wind, reducing it’s effects Weather elements erode relief features The more fertile the soil, the better the vegetation Steep relief = less soil because it runs off and erodes more TIP: Rotate the textboxes so they are parallel to the arrow direction Feel free to add your own.. Climate

Relief Soil Vegetation Climate

Climate Definition: the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.

Quiz Task Person A turn to Person B and ask them to explain how any given 2 elements interact Person B provide an answer and then do the same thing back at them After 2 rounds each, start trying to ‘catch each other out’ by throwing in tricky questions

Spatial Variation of Interaction Now go back to your interaction diagram and duplicate the slide 3 times (or copy + paste) Give each of the new slides the following titles: a. Bolderfield on Ruapehu, b. Beech Forest on Southwest slopes, c. Rangipo Desert (East) Now adjust the thickness of the arrows depending on how strong you think the link is For example: Beech Forest on SW Slopes: VEGETATION CLIMATE

4 September LO) To be able to summarise data into a table SC) You can complete a summary table of data DN) Take 5 minutes to finish your series of 3 interaction diagrams from last lesson (ppt) DNX) Open up the Vegetation and Climate Interaction Summary Table PPT in the S: Folder

Different Locations in TVC Rangipo Desert Boulderfield Beech Forest

5 September LO) To be able to explain the interaction of elements in the TVC SC) You can explain how 2 elements interact differently in different places as SEXY paragraph/s DN) Login to Kahoot.it ready for a quiz…

Spatial Variation Things occur differently in different places, thus creating Spatial Variation. This creates Patterns This means interactions may be stronger or weaker in different parts of the TVC Think about this as you answer the following questions in full sentences

Spatial Variation Climate interacts with relief by eroding the land – where in TVC would this occur most? Where would it occur the least? Why? How does the interaction between climate and soil look on the Eastern slopes? How does it look on the Western slopes? EXTRA: Write your own question! Then give it to a buddy to answer

Paragraph Exemplars So what does this answer actually look like? You will have 2 exemplars come up on your screen. You must ‘grade them’ based on the marking schedule in front of you. There is an A and E You are looking to see if the student: Explain how the characteristics interact Explain how the interaction varies in different parts of the environment (in our case, the TVC) Include specific evidence (eg rainfall data from notes)

Paragraph Answer Writing Putting all the pieces together Use the following sentence starters to write a full paragraph answer on interaction between 2 elements. Be sure to: Explain how the characteristics interact Explain how the interaction varies in different parts of the environment (in our case, the TVC) Include specific evidence (eg rainfall data from notes)

How to Write it Typed up on either: Word and emailed to me (ghaddon@aorere.ac.nz) Google Doc and shared with me (mrhaddonnz@gmail.com) You Must have a completed paragraph response to me by the end of the weekend – no exceptions, no extensions

INTERACTION Sentence Starters The elements of climate and ___________ are key features of the TVC, and interact in different ways in different parts of the environment In this environment, the prevailing weather is from the West with evaporation occurring over the Tasman Sea and precipitation occurring mainly on the ________________, which receives ________ of rainfall per year. This creates a spatial pattern of ______________ where _____________________because as …... This can be contrasted to the Eastern slopes of ____________, where the rain shadow effect can be observed. This means that the climate is _____________________, exemplified by a rainfall of only ______________. This creates……

Old Task | Elements Diagram You will be given strips of paper which each have a single interaction written on them Your task is to construct an interaction diagram by drawing an arrow head on each strip and gluing it into your book in the right place to link the elements together Start by gluing/writing in the elements (in capital letters) and then add in your ‘arrows’ to illustrate what is interacting with what

Old Task | Processes Diagram You will be given strips of paper which each have a single interaction written on them Your task is to construct an interaction diagram of Natural Processes by drawing an arrow head on each strip and gluing it into your book in the correct place Start by gluing/writing in the Natural process words (in capital letters) and then add in your ‘arrows’ to illustrate what is interacting with what
