Historical Information Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869 at Cateau-Cambresis, France. He grew up in Bohain-en-Vermandois, near the Belgain border. He was the son of a grain and seed merchant.

The Open Window He studied law in Paris. At the age of 20 he suffered from appendicitis. While he was recovering from his illness his mother bought him art supplies.

Henry Matisse He suddenly became inspired to become an artist. Henri Matisse is considered an accidental artist. In 1898 he married Amelia Parayre. He was known as a French painter.

Henry Matisse He painted, did paper cut outs, painted murals, stain glass, sketching, and published an illustrated a book. He died at the age of 84 on November 3, 1954 suffering from a heart attack.

Contribution to Art Movement He started the fauvist movement. Fauves means wild beast in French. Henri was known as the king of the fauves.

Contributions That Changed Art Henri was considered to be influential and representative. His paintings were traditional like nudes, figures and landscapes, portraits, and interior views. His paintings were energized with color.

Contributions That Changed Art He got approval from the most influential critics. He found when opposite colors appear together they were more concentrated. His bold colors gave more intensity than any other paintings.

Contributions That Changed Art His goal was for young painters to enjoy living and to not worry about day to day stress. He affected the art and style of many young painters.

Why Henri is Important AND Why He Should Be Remembered His paintings are a mystery. It builds courage for people to be creative. His paintings are soothing and calming to some people.

Stillborn His art lets people express their feelings. He used colors like no other artist. He had a very unusual style.

Goldfish He created his own style. He makes life bright and bold. He was a part of the Fauvist group who paved the way for modern expression.

The Gourds His modern abstract painting inspired others to try things such as taking a painting and turn it into cut-outs and then to reassemble them again. He usually used a flat canvas. He knew how to communicate meaning, emotions and expressions.

The Young Sailor He taught others to be risk takers. He was one of the most influential painters of the 20 th century. He was guided by instinct and intuition.
