Wednesday August 29, 2012 (Lab Map; Importance of Safety Equipment; Material Safety Data Sheets)

Please pick up a yellow half-sheet of paper, then write the following question on one side of this paper: Why is it important to know where to quickly find the safety equipment in the laboratory? Bell Ringer Wednesday, … so there is not any lost time in dealing with a safety issue or emergency.

Announcements Please remember that we will have our first Quiz on Friday. Please have your science journal by tomorrow – composition book, 3-ring binder, or spiral notebook.

Assignment Currently Open Summative or Formative? Date Issued Date Due Date Into GradeSpeed Final Day ESS Class Information Sheet F8/278/28 ESS Class Procedures and Expectations F8/278/29 Safety ContractF8/288/30

Activity Take your yellow half-sheet of paper and make a map of the classroom. Draw and label all of the safety equipment in the room.

Discussion Let’s take a further look at the need for safety equipment (especially goggles) in the chemistry lab. On your yellow sheet, please write the following question: Why is it necessary to strictly adhere to lab safety rules when working in a science laboratory? Play … to decrease the chances of an injury.

MSDS Sheets MSDS is a very widely used abbreviation for Material Safety Data Sheet. A MSDS contains details of the hazards associated with a chemical, and gives information on its safe use. MSDS sheets are kept in the backroom of this lab.

MSDS Sheets Work with one of your SLC partners and share an MSDS Research Form. Get one of the sample MSDS sheets from Mr. C. Fill out the Research form using the MSDS sheet. Be prepared to give a verbal presentation on the information that you discover. Question: Why do you think the MSDS sheets should be kept in a place other than this lab or the chemical storeroom?

Wrap Up Please turn in your yellow map and your team’s MSDS Research Form before leaving class today.
