SCIENCE 10 Pond Water Lab

During the Lab… Obtain pond water sample from side of class Try to get water from sides or near bottom Use a small drop Keep plastic pipettes organized! (Don’t want to cross contaminate) Observe pond water under microscope. Use field guide to locate specimens Complete biological drawing of specimen (rough & good copy) Calculate actual size of specimen Complete observations and conclusions questions on front page of lab

Here’s what you need to submit: Submit the following (in the order listed) 1.Pond Water Lab Title Page 2.Microscope review questions 3.Two practice biological drawings 4.Pre-lab research assignment 5.Observation Questions – include draft sketches 6.Two Pond Water Biological drawings 7.Conclusion Questions

After the lab: Making Connections 1.Review the field guide and brainstormed list of plants and animals from your pre-lab research. 1.Is there anything you would like to add to these lists based on your pond water observations? 2. Use small Post-It notes (or other small pieces of paper) write the names of at least 10 of the plants and animals from the list.

3. Create a food web using the Post-It notes. Use a large piece of construction paper to create a display. ** You may want to use a computer to determine what each of your organisms eat. 4. Compare food webs with other groups.

5. Predict what would happen if : a specific organism was removed from the web due to disease or pollution the population of one organism was to double an exotic (invasive) species was introduced to the food web.
