Project By: Alex Ross

Every year, in the country of Panem, a boy and a girl from each district get picked to compete in the Hunger Games, a fight to the death intended to show the power of the Capitol and stop the country’s 12 districts from revolting. The Tribute originally picked from District 12 is a little girl named Prim. Her older sister, Katniss, volunteers to go to the games in her place. But when the other Tribute from District 12, Peeta, declares that he is in love with Katniss, the Hunger Games get more interesting...

The main character of the story goes to the Hunger Games as a Tribute from District 12. She lives with her little sister, Prim, and her mother. To feed her family, Katniss goes hunting illegally in the woods with her best friend Gale. She is an expert in archery and uses that skill to her advantage in the Games to keep her and Peeta alive.

Peeta is a son of a baker living in District 12. He was the boy Tribute for the District. He is madly in love with Katniss. In the games, he is badly wounded trying to save Katniss. Later in the Games, Katniss helps him by healing his wound and saving his life.

Gale is Katniss’s best friend and fellow hunter. He has three younger siblings and a mother. He also hunts to feed his family. In the forest, away from the Capitol’s cameras and intelligence, he rants about how he thinks the Capitol is bad. Despite being best friends with Katniss, there is no romantic connection between them, at least not yet...

The winner of a previous Hunger Games from District 12, is now the mentor for Katniss and Peeta. He is an alcoholic but promises to stay sober enough to help teach them to survive in the arena. He knew that getting sponsors is as important to staying alive as strength and smarts. It was also his idea to have Peeta confess his true feelings about Katniss to help them get sponsors.

Rue is the 12 year old girl Tribute from District 11. She teams up with Katniss during the games. Katniss feels love and affection for Rue because she reminds Katniss of Prim. Together, they destroy the Career Tribute’s supplies. But before long, Rue is killed by the boy Tribute from District 1.

Prim is Katniss’s beloved, younger sister. Her name was called in the Reaping but Katniss volunteered to take her place in the Games. Katniss loves Prim more than anyone, even her own mother. That is why she was willing to risk her life by going to the Games for Prim.

Cinna is Katniss’s stylist for the Hunger Games. He creates the idea of making Katniss the ‘Girl on Fire’ by dressing her in outfits that make her appear on fire. This idea gets her attention and sponsors. Katniss and Cinna become good friends.

At the start of the Games, Katniss grabbed a pack with supplies in it. For the next couple of days, she was fighting thirst in the arena. At the brink of death, she found a pond to drink from. The next day, a fire created by the Game Makers flushed her out and brought her closer to the other Tributes. The others found her so she climbed up a tree. In the morning, she dropped a nest of tracker jackers, or mutated wasps, on the tributes. Their stings killed two of the Tributes. Afterwards, the survivors came back for Katniss but Peeta risked his life to save her and was brutally injured. Katniss made an alliance with Rue and blew up the other Tributes’ supplies. Rue was killed shortly after. When Katniss went to find Peeta, she found him injured and nursed him back to health. After that they went to kill the only other tribute, Cato. They were chased by mutated dogs, or mutts, and Cato was eaten by the mutts.

After Cato died, Katniss and Peeta went to the lake. The Capitol announced that there could only be one winner, so one of them would have to die. So Katniss took out poisoned berries and proposed that she and Peeta eat them at the same time. Then, The Capitol announced that there could be two winners, so Katniss and Peeta dropped the berries. After Katniss and Peeta were out of the arena, they learned that what they did was seen as an act of rebellion, punishable by death. Their only chance was to act so in love that they couldn’t account for their actions. That is the only way that Katniss will live.
