 Promotes Lifelong Learning  Keystone to Good Classroom Management  Provides excellent formative assessment data  Fosters the development of individuals who are purposeful thinkers and independent learners

In A How-To Plan for Widening the Gap, Kim Marshall writes, “Training teachers to call on students who raise their hands…would enhance the self- confidence of already proficient students and minimize class participation and engagement among those who enter with lower proficiency.”

“Student engagement has long been recognized as the core of effective schooling.” Dr. Robert Marzano, 2011

 Participate in a PLC to integrate Mimio technology into my classroom to increase engagement  Read research articles on engagement and implement strategies  Read and implement strategies presented in weekly bulletins  Create SLANT poster and integrate the acronym into everyday learning

 Engage students in choral responses  Use "Think, Pair, Share", "Think, Write, Cover, Show" (with whiteboards), "Turn and Talk"  Assign students a variety of partners (monthly talk partner, table partners - side-by-side and across)  Implement a "No Hands" policy  Use random calling and dip sticks

 There will be an established routine of engagement  Students will be engaged without raising their hands  Students will be held accountable through all of these strategies  Increasing student engagement will lead to increased student achievement

 Is there a quantitative data approach that I can add to my research?  How can I measure my success?  Is there a way for students to track and/or self-assess their own engagement?
