Manav Rachna College of Engineering 2 Intranet…………

Manav Rachna College of Engineering 3 Intranet Basics (what it is) Internet technologies used on the corporate network Internet technologies behind the corporate firewall An Intranet is an internal information system based on Internet technology, mainly TCP/IP and HTTP for networking protocols, and HTML for publishing. An Intranet connects people together with Internet technology in a single view

Manav Rachna College of Engineering 4 Intranet Basics (what it is not) not the Internet not the extranet Not a single application like or the Web Not Just Hardware and Software Not Groupware.

Manav Rachna College of Engineering 5 Intranet from a technical perspective While the TCP/IP architecture has many component protocols it is only a small subset of its application protocols that are being examined for the Intranet. Internet application protocols and their uses httpaccess to web text and graphical information nntpaccess to newsgroups, conferencing irc,chat...real time text and conferencing tool mailmessage exchange, mailing lists waisindex and document retrieval

Manav Rachna College of Engineering 6 Common Intranet applications - corporate perspective On many a corporate intranet most employees will have their browser pointing at an internal home page. What should be on it? Company Newsletter Financial Information Sales and marketing information Project management information Help Desk Vendor Contacts Software Downloads Human Resources Company Events Discussion Groups ? Mailing Lists?  Probably much more !

8 Tremendous technical advantages to be had! The speed and security the Internet is lacking May obviate Internet access requirements and problems A single interface facilitates debugging Easily navigated via the ubiquitous browser familiar to the end user Extremely scalable Implies a distributed computing strategy Can extend to multimedia Will probably extend to future technologies

Manav Rachna College of Engineering 9 Tremendous corporate advantages to be had! the all-in-one tool provides reliable information directly from the source event-driven as opposed to calendar-driven reduces the cost of time to market solicitous of end user customizable by end user  The Intranet is a single communications tool linking together all corporate departments with a common feel providing accurate and instant information to anyone to anywhere within a corporation.

Manav Rachna College of Engineering 10 Intranet problems Many Intranet problems are identical to those on the Internet, after all it is the same underlying technology. Some additional things to consider. Security within an organization may pose a greater threat than on the Internet Privacy - Will you track access of a page ? Broken links Conversion tools may not be perfect Printing Which browser ? Which server ?

Manav Rachna College of Engineering 11 Setting Intranet standards That word seems to be showing up over and over again. What are some of the areas that need to be standardized? What is your browser of choice? Do you need to standardize on a server platform as well? Which multimedia formats will be supported? Will you use (or develop ) page templates for ease and consistency? File and Directory Standards ? Will you be able to identify the author ? Which HTML authoring tools and conversion tools? How to program the CGIs ? Who will administer this ? How will standards be set, administered and enforced?
