Planning Commanding Controlling Organizing Coordinating FIVE FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT Source: Fayol Henri, General & Industrial management

1 Planning Creating action plans that combine unity, continuity, flexibility and precision based on the organisation's resources, type and significance of work and future trends. This is the most difficult of the five tasks. It requires the whole organisation to take active part. Planning has to be coordinated on different levels and with different time horizons. FIVE FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT Source: Fayol Henri, General & Industrial management

2 Organising Day to day running of the business like providing capital, personnel and raw materials. The organisational structure depends on the number of employees. An increase in the number of functions expands the organisation horizontally. FIVE FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT Source: Fayol Henri, General & Industrial management

3 Commanding Optimising return from all employees to benefit the entire enterprise is important. The most successful managers have personal integrity, communicate clearly and base their judgments on regular audits. They create unity, energy, initiative and loyalty and eliminate incompetence. FIVE FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT Source: Fayol Henri, General & Industrial management

4 Coordinating Activities are unified and harmonized to maintain the balance between them in the organisation. Weekly conferences for department heads are a good way to solve problems of common interest. FIVE FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT Source: Fayol Henri, General & Industrial management

5 Controlling Errors and weaknesses are identified by controlling feedback. Activities with plans, policies and instructions are conformed. For Fayol, the managing director overlooked a living organism that requires liaison officers and joint committees. FIVE FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT Source: Fayol Henri, General & Industrial management
