Active Transport

What is Active Transport Defined as: Physical activity undertaken as a means of transport. It can include walking, cycling and using a scooter. Choosing active transport has many benefits for the students, the wider community and the environment.

Atwell Primary School Hands Up Survey June & August Travel to School 64% Car 36% Active Transport (walk, bike, bus)

Fact Only around 32% of boys in Primary School use active transport and 26% of girls.

Fact Forty years ago, about 75% of Australian children walked or rode to school and only 25% were driven. Now those figures are reversed and the streets around the schools are congested.

Benefits of Active Transport Reduce congestion and parking problems, especially during peak periods Increase physical activity, improve health and fitness Increase safety, students are learning to make road wise decisions Improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions Develop independence Create closer communities, expand friendships and develop an awareness of your neighbourhood Low cost activity, save money on petrol Fun activity that keeps students alert and ready for school

Safety Identify safe pathways and designated pedestrian crossings Bike helmet Students up to the age of 12 are allowed to ride on footpaths The school recommends students under the age of 10 years walking or cycling to school must be accompanied by an adult or carer Identify Safety House locations (pin up board, library)
