How We Tell Stories… Since the beginning of humanity, we’ve told stories. They started out as simple hunting stories and as time went on they developed into so much more…

 Myths are very meaningful, very ancient stories.  They attempt to explain hard to understand things.  Myths involve gods, goddesses, superhuman beings/creatures, creation, beginnings of evil, and explanations for natural phenomena.

 Legends are old stories that teach us lessons.  Often legends develop from real people who do incredible things. But in the retelling of the stories, the event becomes greater than the truth.

 Definition: Who tells us the story and how it is told…  The story teller is the narrator. He or she impacts our view of actions and characters because we see them through his/her perspective.

 Omniscient- The narrator knows all about the characters and moves in and out of characters. Example: Pandora’s Box  Limited - The narrator limits his omniscience to the minds of a few characters or to one character. All is seen through their eyes. Example: Harry Potter  Objective - Does not enter the mind or thoughts. Acts like a camera recording what is seen or heard with the character. You watch to interpret what they are thinking.  Subjective- The reader hears the thoughts of the character.

 Told like a journal…The narrator is a…  Major Character- The narrator is the major character and the story is about him or her. Example: Percy Jackson  Minor Character-Tells the story but focuses on someone else. Ex: Sherlock Holmes  Innocent eye- Told through a child’s mind. Example: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas  Stream of Consciousness- Story told through unbroken thought. Twilight, Hunger Games

PROTAGONISTANTAGONIST

 Plot- The unfolding of events that make up a story.  Conflict- Is the struggle of opposing forces in a story. The main conflict begins typically at the beginning during the exposition.
