First results of the HRMT-09 tests on a LHC TCT collimator in HiRadMat Collimation WG Meeting Oliver Aberle on behalf of the Collimation team, special thanks to M. Cauchi, K. Weiss, R. Bebb and J. Lendaro HRMT-09 1 Collimation WG Meeting
First visual inspection in B Collimation WG Meeting History can be found in Marija‘s presentation (CWG, ): Preliminary Results of TCT HiRadMat Tests Preliminary Results of TCT HiRadMat Tests RP check before inspection (Kurt Weiss): Dose rate is the highest under the collimator box, not in excess of 40 contact. Contamination found, results available soon

Some pictures –Downstream side clean (on first glance) 4 Collimation WG Meeting –Particles and dust between jaws and behind RF fingers
Some pictures Loose particles, fragments and droplets of different sizes. Distribution could have been modified by transportation and manipulation. (Note: Jaws have been moved prior to inspection) Collimation WG Meeting
Impact side - Upstream Upstream side Spread droplets Large lips of excess metal Collimation WG Meeting
Impact side - Upstream Debris of large dimensions. Concentrated around the impact region. Some distant projections? Collimation WG Meeting 7
Jaws opened Collimation WG Meeting 8 Jaw opened to full retracted position (switches). Projections from impact towards top and bottom plate (from test 3 towards opposite jaw). Vaporisation deposit around molten region. Test 1 Test 2 Test 3
Left jaw Collimation WG Meeting 9 34 mm ~ 3 mm Deposition from test 3
Right jaw Collimation WG Meeting 10 ~ 4 mm ~ 2 blocks (400mm)
Next steps Results from smear test to quantify and qualify contamination. Cross check the beam and impact parameters and compare with simulations. Better estimate of dimensional extent of visible damage. Possibility of inserting tools? Access to the tungsten blocks, open the box? Collaboration with external partners (e.g. PSI)?
