BACKGROUND ON HPS WHEN: 2001-following establishment health promotion: component with 2 staff members WHY: National Mandate  Suitable approach for implementation of health promotion.  Create healthy and safe environments for school community- school health services forming an integral part of HPS  Stakeholders: Networking.

BACKGROUND ON HPS HOW:  Consultation  Information sessions  Task Team  Situated analysis  Pilot in 21 schools (Healthy life)

PROVINCIAL PROFILE  Is mostly rural  Depends on mining and agriculture for economy  Population 5,5 million -estimated  Five health districts: 21 local areas.

CRITERIA ASSESSMENT TOOL  Before: a tool to conduct situation analysis at school  After: an application for launching used

FUTURE PLANS  More rural schools will get opportunity to be included in the program (only 5 included so far)  Educator training on the concept will be intensified: sustainability  Impact assessment survey  Structured monitoring and evaluation

CONSTRAINTS FOR HPS Human resources leading to  No sustainability  Slow rollout out process  Line function  Lack of support  Poor infrastructure eg water supply

CONCLUSION HPS is a good concept, but needs more commitment from all stakeholders
