Importance of good listening skills Listening helps you concentrate better during lectures Listening while taking notes enhances recall of essential points from lecture Listening carefully enriches the student’s confidence Listening helps you concentrate better during lectures Asking questions offer valuable proof that the students are committed to learning Listening and participating makes a good impression on the speaker Asking questions offers valuable proof that the students are committed to learning Succeed in school… by improving listening skills

Poor Listening Habits Bored with the topic or speaker so the student ignores the lecture Student is lazy expecting the teacher to make allowances for their deficient listening. Taking notes with out concern for understanding “I wrote it down” Students fall victim to losing focus after a short time Student listens for main points only, ignoring supportive information Student welcomes distractions and even creates distractions so as to avoid the learning process Succeed in school… by improving listening skills

Good Listening Habits The attitude of a good listener is in spite of the topic or speaker the student will focus on the lecture regardless Student understands their responsibility to listen and learn While taking notes students listen carefully to ensure accuracy and substance Students keeps their focus until the lecture is finished Students listens for main points as well as supportive information including any evidence for validation of presented points Students ignore distractions easily Succeed in school… by improving listening skills
