 A plastic material is any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solids used in the manufacture of industrial products  The word plastic is derived from the Greek word plastikos meaning capable of being shaped or molded

 Plastics are durable and degrade very slowly.  Since the 1950s, one billion tons of plastic have been discarded and may persist for hundreds or even thousands of years  In some cases, burning plastic can release toxic fumes

 The production of polystyrene contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer
