Conditional Statements

Conditional Statement Another name for an IF-THEN statement is a CONDITIONAL STATEMENT. Every conditional has 2 parts. The part following the “IF” is called the HYPOTHESIS, and the part following the “then” is called the CONCLUSION. Use two different colors to highlight the hypothesis and the conclusion for the given conditional statement. If Texas won the 2006 Rose Bowl football game, then Texas was college football’s 2006 national champion.

A conditional can have a TRUTH VALUE of true or false. 1.To Show that a conditional is true, show that each time the hypothesis is true, then the conclusion is also true. 2.To show that a conditional is false, you need to find only one COUNTEREXAMPLE for which the hypothesis is true and the conclusion is false.

Ven Diagram Ven diagram can also be used to help illustrate a conditional statement. If you live in Dearborn, then you live in Michigan Live in Michigan Live in Dearborn

Converse of a conditional The converse of a conditional is on we switch the hypothesis and the conclusion It is possible for a conditional and its converse to have different truth values. Example: If two lines are collinear, then they are on the same line
