doc.: IEEE /1397r0 Submission Nov 2013 Brian Hart (Cisco Systems) Slide 2 Summary Problem –2.4 GHz is regarded as a junk band –Too much traffic, too many Bluetooth devices / Zigbee devices –Detailed analysis shows considerable medium time consumption due to mgmt frames (Probe Req/Rep, Beacons sent at 1 Mbps) and control frames (RTS/CTS, CTS2self sent at 1 Mbps) and collisions Solution –Reduce usage of DSSS/CCK rates –Reduce usage of non-1/6/11/14 channels –Port narrowband 11ac features (256QAM, VHT sounding, MU-MIMO, 8SS) to 2.4 GHz Summary –Ensure that the HEW scope supports these directions

doc.: IEEE /1397r0 Submission Nov 2013 Brian Hart (Cisco Systems) Slide 3 Problem: 2.4 GHz is regarded as a junk band Spectrum is not like a fishery – it doesnt get fished out. Spectrum renews itself at every moment at every location. Detailed analysis shows considerable medium time consumption due to mgmt frames (Probe Req/Rep, Beacons sent at 1 Mbps) and control frames (RTS/CTS, CTS2self sent at 1 Mbps) –KDDI 13/758, 7Signal 13/545, etc How can we can minimize this traffic, in order to renew 2.4 GHz?

doc.: IEEE /1397r0 Submission Nov 2013 Brian Hart (Cisco Systems) Slide 4 Solution: Minimize Mgmt Traffic Overheads (1/2) Recommendation 1: HEW STAs transmit Beacons, Probe Requests and Probe Responses at OFDM rates –With two exceptions: A HEW AP may respond at DSSS/CCK rates to a probe request that indicates that DSSS/CCK are the only supported rates A HEW client may actively scan at DSSS/CCK rates only after actively scanning at OFDM rates when a) no APs respond or b) the APs that respond include the Use_Protection field in the ERP element equal to 1 (i.e. DSSS/CCK-only AP or STA is nearby) –Recommendation 1 should lead to a 6-fold reduction in mgmt traffic –Side-effect: DSSS/CCK-only passive-scanning-only clients cannot detect HEW APs. However, there are very few DSSS/CCK-only passive-scanning-only clients, getting fewer, and many existing APs have been more aggressive than this for many years (disallowing DSSS/CCK-only clients from associating) so any impact is expected to be slight. HEW and 11ai efforts to discourage DSSS/CCK rates can complement efforts at WFA

doc.: IEEE /1397r0 Submission Nov 2013 Brian Hart (Cisco Systems) Slide 5 Solution: Minimize Ctrl Traffic Overheads Recommendation 2: Unless Use_Protection is set, HEW STAs transmit MAC protection at OFDM rates –Recommendation 2 should lead to a 6-fold reduction in MAC protection traffic –NOTE: a DSSS/CCK PPDU has the property that, if transmitted on channel n, the PPDU is oftentimes correctly received on channel n+-1, n+-2 etc. –Side-effect: an OFDM control frame sent on channel n+-1 (e.g. ch7) does not cause virtual carrier sense to be set on a STA on channel n (e.g. ch6). This in turn implies that HEW APs select non-overlapping channels (and other APs should be encouraged by WFA to do the same)

doc.: IEEE /1397r0 Submission Nov 2013 Brian Hart (Cisco Systems) Slide 6 Solution: Minimize Mgmt Traffic Overheads (2a/2) Recommendation 3: Allowed channels for HEW APs are limited to channels 1, 6, 11 and 14 (and WFA should encourage all APs to follow this convention) –Recommendation 3 allows more reliable virtual carrier sense in an OFDM-dominated world. –Over time, Recommendation 3 also leads towards a further 3-5x reduction in probing traffic. This is because today we see clients sending a probe request on ch1, then ch2, then ch3 (all the while consuming medium time on ch1), then ch4/5/6/7/8 (all the while consuming medium time on ch6), etc. As clients see fewer and fewer APs on channels 2-5, 7-10, they can cycle through channels 1/6/11/(14) more and more times relative to the number of times that they cycle through the other channels –Seen today (US): / repeat –Proposed for near future (US): / / / / / repeat –Proposed for far future (US) / repeat

doc.: IEEE /1397r0 Submission Nov 2013 Brian Hart (Cisco Systems) Slide 7 Solution: Minimize Mgmt Traffic Overheads (2b/2) Constraining the allowed channels at 2.4 GHz will be a challenge for the industry: –the benefits take time to accrue –vendors differentiate themselves by their channel selection algorithms, and greatest differentiation comes from greatest freedom –some countries can use 1/5/9/13 (although 1/6/11 is very common and getting more common due to the selection by Wi-Fi Direct for 1/6/11 to be the social channels) But, the calculus is changing: a) MAC protection with OFDM PPDUs doesnt work in partially overlapped channels, b) non-overlapped channels significantly reduce painful probing overhead, c) Zigbee, AFH Bluetooth Classic and BLE are not going away, and they benefit from consistent Wi-Fi gaps (e.g. BLE advertising channels avoid OFDM at 1/6/11), d) Wi-Fi Direct settled on 1/6/11 as the social channels The world will be better off if Wi-Fi allows channels 2-5, 7-10, and to fall into disuse. IEEE HEW and 11ai efforts can complement activities at WFA.

doc.: IEEE /1397r0 Submission Nov 2013 Brian Hart (Cisco Systems) Slide ac does not support 2.4 GHz, but not always for good technical reasons Many 11ac techniques are valuable even when confined to 20 MHz operation: –256 QAM –VHT sounding –MU-MIMO –8SS These features can easily be adopted at 2.4 GHz by existing dual-band 11n/11ac devices (no baseband HW changes, minimal RF changes) ac features can be deployed in a vendor specific manner at 2.4 GHz today of course, but we should ultimately offer IEEE-compliant, WFA-certified products to users.

doc.: IEEE /1397r0 Submission Nov 2013 Brian Hart (Cisco Systems) Slide 9 Suggested PAR Scope Language including peak throughput* and efficiency + improvements for 2.4 GHz HEW is permitted to provide reduced & interoperability with DSSS/CCK- only devices *i.e. 256QAM, 8SS, VHT sounding + i.e. Mgmt and MAC protection frames at OFDM rates, non-overlapping channels, MU-MIMO, VHT sounding & e.g. no connectivity for DSSS/CCK-only passive-scanning-only clients

doc.: IEEE /1397r0 Submission Nov 2013 Brian Hart (Cisco Systems) Slide 10 Summary Ensure the PAR&5C allows HEW, in conjunction with 11ai and WFA, to –Discourage use of DSSS/CCK for mgmt frames (6x less overhead) –Discourage use of DSSS/CCK for ctrl frames (6x less overhead) –Limit HW AP channels to 1/6/11/(14) (effective virtual carrier sense; enables 3- 5x less overhead over time) Ensure the PAR&5C allows HEW to –Port narrowband 11ac features to 2.4 GHz such as 256QAM, VHT sounding, MU-MIMO, 8SS Let the renewal of 2.4 GHz begin!
