6 th Science Unit: 3.Parts of plants Sub-Unit Introduction 3.2 Roots 3.3 Stem 3.4 Leaf 3.5 Flower 3.6 Fruit

Introduction We know that all the many things around us, some are living & some are non living. Living thing includes plants & animals. We find a verity of plants & animals around us. Some plants are flowering & Some are non flowering plants.

There are many different kinds of plants. Giant oaks, tiny roses, and banana trees are all plants.

Pitcher plant

Parts of the plants

Root The seed has parts called the plumule & radicle. When the seed germinates the root grows from the radicle under the ground

The root grows many branches or lateral roots under the ground. The tip of the root has some hair like fibers these are called root hairs

Roots take up water and other materials that plants need from the soil.

How might roots that grow into the ground help the tree in windy weather?

Stem The stem grows from plumule above the ground As the plumule grows, the height of the stem increases.

The stem has nodes. The part of the stem between two nodes is called the internode The chief functions of stems are the production and support of leaves and reproductive structures, conduction of water and nutrients, and occasionally food storage.

Question hour 1.Which are the parts of plant? 2.Draw a neat & labelled digram of parts of the stem?

Leaf Leaves grows on a stem at the nodes. Ordinarily, they are wide, thin & green in colour

The flat part is called leaf blade The edge of the leaf is called the margin and its tip, the leaf tip or leaf apex. Leaves have a stalk called petiole The part of the stalk joined to the stem is called the leaf base. Some leaves have a small leaf like part near the leaf base. It is called stipule.

Types of leaves

Most of a plant’s food is made in its leaves

Flowers

Parts of a Flower

Fruit A fruit has a seed inside it some fruit have more than one seed.

Question hour 1.Which are the parts of plant? 2.Draw a neat & labeled diagram of parts of the Leaf?
