A/C Power Systems General Locations

This module will cover the General Locations of the A/C Power Systems through out the vessel. The A/C Power Systems are divided into three distinct sub systems: 1.Shore Power (Including Off-Ship Power) 2.Power Generation 3.Power Distribution A/C Power Systems

Shore Power Power comes on to the vessel in the form of 480 Volt, Three Phase, 60 Hz Alternating Current (A/C) 100 amps. The plug on the left is Shore Power in. The plug on the right is Power Out: 480 Volt, Three Phase, 60 Hz, 50 amps.

Shore Power The plug is designed to disconnect safely with a live load on the line. Prevents arcing. This feature enhances the safety of connecting and disconnecting shore power in the event we forget to open the shore power breaker on the dock.

Shore Power Main Switchboard – Shore Power Shore Power drops down from the main deck and into the Main Switchboard. The port side of the Main Switchboard is the Shorepower section. Voltage Meter Amp Meter Hertz Power Phase Indication Source Supplying Buss Indicator

You can also select what power source (shore versus generator) is placed on the main bus.

Closed – Connects both sides of bus) Note: Usually closed

Shore Power Wheel House Power Tree The Wheel House Power Tree gives a visual indication to the Pilot, as he enters the wheelhouse, as to the status of shore power. Power Connected – Red Light. Don’t drive away! Power Available – Red Light. Don’t drive away! On Line – Green Light Bus supplied by shore power.

Off-Ship Power The fireboat is capable of providing 480 Volt, Three phase power to another vessel, the other fireboat, or a shore based facility. Just hook up the off-ship power cord to the off ship receptacle and… Off-Ship 480 Volt, 3 phase, 50 amp service

Off-Ship Power …close this breaker on the port, lower panel of the Main Switchboard Off-Ship 480 Volt, 3 phase, 50 amp service

Power Generation Main Switch Board – Generator Controls and Gauging Port Generator Starboard Generator

Power Generation Main Switch Board – Generator Controls and Gauging Local Control of the Generators happens on the two panels that control their respective generators. Voltage Meter Amp Meter Hertz Meter Power Meter

Voltage Meter Line Selector Amp Meter Line Selector Sync Lights Syncroscope Indicator Generator Breaker Position Indicator Generator Off/Stby/Main Selector Generator Winding Heater indicator, on/off switch Generator E-Stop Power Generation Paralleling Selector Switch (Manual/Auto) Syncroscope On/Off Main Switch Board – Generator Controls and Gauging

Power Generation Main Switch Board – Generator Controls and Gauging EasyGen Controller Within the Main Switch Board, behind each generator’s control and gauging panel, are the SmartGen Generator Control Human- Machine Interface (HMI) displays. These computers controls the automated load transfer, paralleling, and shut-down features of each generator. They also measure and record performance, output and faults.

Power Generation Main Switch Board – Generator Breaker Generator Power Motor Operated Circuit Breaker (Allows manual or remote/automatic connect/disconnect of generator to main bus) Each generator has its own motor operator circuit breaker. These breakers are located below the respective generator’s control panel on the Main Switchboard.

Power Distribution The Main Switchboard is the hub of the electrical distribution system. Everything ties into the 480 Volt Bus in the Main Switchboard. Some devices and sub-panels are directly connected to the bus through breakers. Other sub-panels are connected to the main bus through step-down transformers that divide the power to 220 volt systems or 120 volt systems. Keep in mind, the main bus is divided into a port and starboard side; linked by the bus tie breaker (normally closed). Shore power and the Port Generator feed the starboard side of the bus, and the Starboard Generator feeds the port side of the bus. Also, off-ship power comes of the port side of the bus. Yeah, it’s a little backwards, but that’s what we got. Take a look at the next slide for clarification… Main Switchboard

Power Distribution Step Down Transformers Power is stepped down form 480 Volt A/C from the main bus to 220 and 120 Volt A/C via transformers. There are two (2) transformers for the 220 Volt A/C system and two for the 120 Volt A/C system. The system is configured this way for redundancy. Should the primary transformer for either system fail, the transformer may be switched to the secondary at the incoming breaker boxes seen here. 120 Volt transformer switching on the top. 220 Volt transformer switching on the bottom.
