Early Alert March 19, 2015

Early Alert Over the past year and a half, the Early Alert Committee has developed and piloted a proposed next step to mid-semester evaluations – Susan Awbrey – Darrin Hanna – Eddie Cheng – Beth DeVerna – Judy Ableser – Krista Malley – Nancy Schmitz – Reuben Ternes – Sara Webb – Steve Shablin – Wallis Andersen – Bill Johnson

Mid-Semester Evaluations – Only offer a “U” to signify to a student that they are underperforming – The MSE date is too early for some faculty to adequately identify “at risk” students – Some faculty would prefer that the MSE date is earlier Early Alert

On Feb 20, :02 AM, Dear Julius, I am sending this message because I have made some observations about challenges that I believe are making WRT 160 more difficult than it should be for you. I want to share these observations with you along with suggestions and helpful resources that we have at Oakland for you to consider. I have noticed that you have been arriving late/leaving early and failing to turn in assignments timely. I recommend that you attend class regularly and on time and complete homework and readings before class meets. You should address the problems now instead of later. Don’t wait; it’s going to take some work, but these challenges can be overcome at this point so you can still learn and succeed in the course. I also invite you to contact me or visit me during office hours. With wishes for your academic success, Professor Andersen

Pilot Program – Winter 2015 – Tested with EGR 141 and WRT 160 – Approximately XXX s sent – Successful Early Alert

Course Signals (CS) – Study at Purdue University – “Combining the results of all courses using CS in a given semester, there is a percentage point increase in As and Bs awarded between CS users and previous semesters of the same courses not using CS. Along the same lines, there is a 6.41 percentage point decrease in Ds, Fs, and withdrawals awarded to CS users as compared to previous semesters of the same courses not using CS" Early Alert

Proposed Plan – Same as MSE Required for 0XX, 1XX, and 2XX courses – Different from MSE Active for most of the semester – Cycle Reminders instead of Deadlines – Faculty can use more than once per semester s meaningful information valuable to identify general issues and recommendations No grades or U’s, just a personalized message Early Alert

Proposed Plan – Effective Fall 2015 – Replace current MSE process – Early Alert Committee will continue to meet over the summer to refine the choices – Continue to measure usage and success and compare the Faculty Feedback feature starting Fall 2015 to the MSE system prior to Fall Early Alert
