Topic: Volcanoes

An opening in the crust where magma and gases erupt Form at: Volcano

Diamond Head in Hawaii. Sailors thought calcite crystals in the rocks were diamonds. Diamond Head formed as hot magma hitting ocean water, causing explosions that threw exploded magma particles (tuff) into a broad ring.

Mount St. Helens

Steep slope + loose volcanic debris + heavy rains Vesuvius – 79AD

Mt. Vesuvius, Italy

Hot Spots - (Find them on page 5 of the ESRT )

Hawaiian Islands

Oldest Hawaiian Island: Kaui Youngest Hawaiian Island in the Making: Loihi

45 miles wide

Geyser - ex) -

FQ What state will the Yellowstone hot spot be found in the future?
