THESIS: Colorado is a better place to live than Florida. COUNTER ARGUMENT: Many people feel that Florida is a much better place to live than Colorado. They point to the mild winters and warm summers. You don’t even need a coat if you live there. Also, they enjoy their beaches and oceans. This draws people who like to swim and fish. They also have Disneyworld, which draws millions of people every year. This is good for the economy, as well as provides entertainment for all. REBUTTAL: Although at first glance this argument makes Florida seem attractive, it ignores a plethora of facts. Colorado, although having the occasional snowstorm, actually has fairly mild winters as well. When it does snow, it melts within a few days. Coats are a great fashion accessory, but can never be shown off in humid, smelly Florida. A lot of people enjoy those beaches and boating, but many also are eaten alive by Alligators and Sharks. No thanks. And, who on earth could tolerate five minutes at a Disneyworld? The traffic alone would make me move to Georgia.
Choose a partner, then choose a topic. Partner A (alpha, first): Do schools put too much stock in standardized test scores? Are we too dependent on computers? Are actors or professional athletes paid too much? Should students be allowed to grade their teachers? Partner B (alpha, first): Can cellphones be educational tools? Does gym help students perform better in all their classes? Should the school day start later? Should a college education be free?
EACH PARTNER: Write a Closed Thesis Statement declaring a side to your prompt. SWITCH PAPERS Write a Counter Argument to your partner’s CTS Write it as they would. Use the intros I gave you SWITCH PAPERS AGAIN Write a Rebuttal to your partner’s Counter Argument Use the intros I gave you IF NEEDED: use your phone to find some evidence.
