3. Did not believe the clergy or government should or could act as an intermediary between the individual and God.

God alone chooses one’s salvation

1. The Bible provided a model for Puritan writing.

2. Diaries and histories were the most common forms of literary expression in Puritan society. They described the workings of God.

3. Puritans favored a plain style of writing with clarity of expression and uncomplicated figures of speech.

A way of writing that stresses simplicity. It emphasized the use of everyday words from common speech.

The words of a sentence or phrase are taken out of normal order to accommodate rhyme and meter. Example Inversion-In silent night when rest I took. Normal – In silent night when I took rest.
