Partnerships and problem trees

Why research partnership are important Multi-dimensional nature of many development problems Conventional R&D arrangements assign roles to narrow range of actors – research, extension, and farmers – and defines the relationship between actors. It is now recognized that technical and institutional innovations come from a wider range of actors and their interaction. Partnerships is a pragmatic response to this observation

What do partnerships bring Broader agendas –supplements scientific focus with client focus, market perspectives. Helps provide context. Complimentary skills –skills that integrate research into technology diffusion and use. Private distribution of public technologies. Entrepreneurial, advocacy and training skills Complimentary resources –Financial, human and physical capital. New networks –partners bring their own networks of contacts and associates. New patterns of accountable –agreed responsibility to other partners to deliver their contribution to the joint relationship. Highlights importance of the nature of relationship
