COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY/HAVING POSITIVE IMPACT LECTURE BY: REV. PASTOR ALO OLATOKUNBOH CHERUBIM & SERAPHIM MOVEMENT CHURCH (Chapel Of Resurrection), AYONIO FOR: SUNDAY SCHOOL AND BIBLE STUDY TEACHERS

THINGS TO CONSIDER  WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?  STEPS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION  COMMUNICATION CYCLE DIAGRAM

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? Communication is the process of transferring information from one person or device to another. It is a cycle of message from the sender through a medium to the receiver, back to the sender and it goes on and on. But, it is only effective when both the sender and receiver really have an understanding of the message.

STEPS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION I will be considering steps to making communication effective in our delivery of the Bible Study, evangelism, Sermon and day-to- day speeches. For communication to be effective and have positive impact on the listeners, these are few of the things to do:

STEPS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION 1.Begin Interestingly – You have people that are ready to listen to you, you can not afford to lose their attention with your introduction. You can pick or use any of the following points to start your delivery:  You may begin with a story  Begin with a specific illustration  You can use an exhibit  You can ask a question  You can open a quotation from a famous person

STEPS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION 2. Stress Important Words/Statements – There are some words you will mention and you want your listeners to remember, so you stress and repeat them. You can even ask the listeners to repeat after you 3. Change Your Pitch – The tone of your speech should not be the same throughout the message, at a point, you increase your pitch, while at some, you lower it, you don’t learn it, it comes naturally and it depends on the type of delivery you are having

STEPS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION 4. Vary Your Rate of Speaking – No matter how fast you are at speaking, there are some points you have to speak slowly and vice-versa. Speaking slowly indicates important words that you want listeners to grab. 5. Pause Before and After Important Words – When you say something, you pause/wait for it to sink into the memory of the audience/congregation or listeners. When you pause suddenly, it creates the same attention as making a sudden noise, the listeners will definitely be interested in knowing what is going to happen next

STEPS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION 6. Be Interested in Your Audience – You show this interest by going near them, you can even touch them and face an individual as if he or she is the only person in the audience/congregation 7. Smile At and With the People – One of the best ways to get and sustain people’s attention is to smile at and with them. If you say anything funny, give the audience time to laugh, also laugh with them, then call their attention back to what you are saying

STEPS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION 8. Do Your research, find out and bring out new, wonderful and strange ideas – Even if you are teaching a very common topic like ‘Faith’, it is your ability to embark on a research and bring out new ideas that will differentiate you as a scholar of the word. No matter how short the time between your preparation and the time of presentation, you must be able to deliver because you are not expected to study only because you want to preach, but because you want to live in the word

STEPS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION 9. Increase our Reading Ability – If you want to be effective and increase in insight, you need to read the books of men that have insight and have made discovery about what you want to teach
