HU 300 MORALITY Right and Wrong

RING OF GYGES: If you had a ring that would make you INVISIBLE, what would you do? Plato’s Republic

RING OF GYGES Glaucon says that many people do whatever they can get away with while maintaining their reputation. What do you think about his conclusion?

RING OF GYGES Does our assessment of what is “right” or “wrong” depend on the consequences?

What about lying? Is it ever OK? What about Santa Clause? Easter Bunny? Tooth Fairy?

What if someone will be hurt if you tell the truth? Infidelity Domestic abuse or child abuse War situations What other examples can you think of where telling the truth could get someone into serious trouble.

Immanuel Kant Kantian philosophy espouses that humans are born with an inner morality—a conscience that acts as a compass, pointing us toward right and away from wrong.

The Source? Do you agree that we are born with a sense of morality, or do you believe morality is something that is taught?

Let’s look at some large scale issues The Bhopal Disaster Union Carbide Plant gas leak December 1984 Over 10,000 people died Over 30,000 people permanently injured , most with nerve damage and cancers CEO convicted in court of manslaughter

What about….. Big Tobacco and its moral responsibilities? Big Food? Oil Development? Cleaner Energy?

On a smaller scale…. Should you let your spouse or partner drive when he or she has been drinking? Should you blow the whistle if you some something wrong at work? Should you intefere if you see someone hitting someone else? Should you text while driving?

What role do you think religion plays in morality? Most religions have a set of rules, laws or commandments that must be followed in order to live a moral life. Do you think that an non- believer or an atheist can be a good person and live a moral life? What rules might that person be following?
