Draft Local Plan and Transport Strategy Our commitments 800 new dwellings each year to 2031 Maintain traffic at current levels. Remove under-used car parks. Increase Park & Ride promotion and usage. Enhance walking and cycling facilities. Improvements to A2 city junctions. New roads to by-pass villages.
Major road improvements already planned New A2 junction at Bridge. Relief road for Herne village. Relief for Sturry village. Additional spaces at all P&R sites. New A2 off-slip at Wincheap.
Car park capacity changes No loss of car parking spaces. Additional capacity in the right place – Wincheap Park and Ride, Station Road West. Only two car parks to close, plus part of another. Reducing congestion. Supporting local business around Westgate/Station Road West/St Peter’s St/St Dunstan’s. Other car parks earmarked for closure to remain in Local Plan.
Transforming car parking across the district Latest technology being introduced - Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) Making parking and paying easier and simpler – in line with customer feedback. Ticketless, pay for what you use, cash or cashless. Improving cycling and walking paths Extension of riverside walk to Vauxhall Ave from Asda. Eventual extension to Sturry. Subway improvements in city centre. Improved cycling facilities within the city.
Funding the changes Reinvesting parking income into city transport improvements. User pays principle – fairer for all. No burden on the tax payer. Setting price increases for Canterbury for next four years- a properly planned approach. Herne Bay and Whitstable increases for 2016/17 only at this stage. Park and Ride – no increase until 2018/ p. First rise since Park and Ride price reduced to £1 post 4pm from Late night services to Sturry Road and New Dover Road. Park and Ride incentive days.
